James M. Schmidt is a graduate of Bellarmine University (BA), Louisville, KY, and Duke University (BHS), Durham, NC. He has served on the staff of Duke University Medical Center for 32 years in occupational and environmental medicine where he specializes in management of on the job injuries, environmental medical issues and exposures, and work related trauma cases. During this time, he has actively served as a preceptor for many Duke University PA students in their physical assessment courses, and participated in admissions activities for this program.

Mr. Schmidt served in the United States Navy from 1964 to1968 as a Hospital Corpsman, Field Medical Technician, and Clinical Laboratory Assistant. He was attached to the Marines in Vietnam as a Field Corpsman and Senior Corpsman of the Company in 1966-67. He entered the Duke University Physician Assistant Program in the 8 th class, graduating in 1974.

Mr. Schmidt is a charter and founding member of the North Carolina Academy of Physician Assistants (NCAPA). He was honored with a certificate of appreciation for his loyal support by the NCAPA at their 25 th year celebration.
