Dr. Schmidt is a graduate of Bellarmine University (BA), Louisville, KY, University of Louisville, (MA), Louisville, KY, and Duke University (EdD). She is Associate Professor Emeritus of Community & Family Medicine, and served on the faculty of the Duke University Physician Assistant Program from 1997 her retirement in 2006, having taught Laboratory Medicine in the Program since 1974. Dr. Schmidt also holds an emeritus faculty appointment in Pathology. She is certified as a laboratory generalist and specialist in hematology by two national agencies.
Active in the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS), Dr. Schmidt as served in many capacities at state and national levels. She was state President for 2 terms, and national President, as well as serving as Chair of many national committees over the years. She received both the national Master Teacher award (Sherwood Geck Award) and the Kleiner Award for outstanding publication co-authored with a Duke PA Program Alumna, among others. In 1991 she was awarded the title of “Honorary PA” from the Duke Physician Assistant Program and was inducted into Pi Alpha, the national PA Honorary Society in 2005. She also received a Medical Center “Golden Apple” award. Dr. Schmidt was a feature editor for the Journal of the American Academy of Physician Assistants (JAAPA).
Directing the Laboratory Medicine course for the PA Program curriculum was the key role for Dr. Schmidt over the years. In addition, she coordinated the Evidence Based Medicine I course in the first year, participated in the Evidence Based Medicine II curriculum, served as a student advisor, and coordinated the departmental level evaluation system for the PA Program.
